Pragmatics of Emojis
Emojis have become an integral part of digital communication across languages, cultures, and generations. Far from being simple decorative symbols, emojis perform important pragmatic functions that help users express emotions, attitudes, intentions, and interpersonal meanings in text-based interaction. In many ways, emojis compensate for the absence of facial expressions, gestures, intonation, and other nonverbal cues that are available in face-to-face communication (Yus, 2025).
From a pragmatic perspective, the meaning of an emoji cannot be understood solely from its visual appearance. Rather, its interpretation depends heavily on:
- context,
- the relationship between interlocutors,
- cultural norms,
- platform conventions, and
- communicative intentions.
A single emoji may soften criticism, signal humor, express sarcasm, mitigate a request, reinforce solidarity, or even convey meanings that differ across communities of practice1.
Research has shown that emojis function as important resources for managing politeness, stance, facework, emotional expression, and conversational organization in digitally mediated interaction. At the same time, their interpretation is often variable and context-dependent, making them a rich area of study for scholars interested in pragmatics, discourse analysis, computer-mediated communication, and second language (L2) learning.
Emojis are widely used to add emotion, tone, and meaning to digital communication. Common emojis such as 😀, 😊, and 😄 express happiness and friendliness, while 😂 and 🤣 show that something is extremely funny. Others, like ❤️, 🥰, and 💕, represent love, affection, and appreciation, whereas 👍, 👏, and ✅ are often used to show agreement, approval, or success. Emojis such as 🤔 and 🤨 express thinking or doubt, while 😢, 😭, and 😡 communicate sadness, frustration, or anger. Some emojis can be confusing because their meanings depend on context. For example, 🙂 may indicate genuine friendliness or, in some situations, restrained politeness or mild sarcasm; 🙃 is often used to express irony or playfulness; 😭 can mean either deep sadness or that something is so funny it makes the sender “cry”; and 💀 is commonly used by younger people to mean “I’m dead from laughing” or extreme disbelief rather than referring to death.
This section provides resources for exploring the pragmatic functions of emojis, their role in online communication, and their implications for language teaching and learning in multilingual and intercultural contexts.
1 Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis (Wenger, 1998).
